    Sr. Mechanical Equipment Designer II



    Merrick & Company is looking for a very experienced Mechanical Equipment Designer for our Oak Ridge, TN project office to work on technology projects for the Department of Energy (DOE).  This office specializes in the design of prototype/one-off custom equipment, gloveboxes, hoods, specialty research equipment and custom-designed, remotely-operated mechanisms for handling radioactive and hazardous materials. Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.


    Job Description

    Mechanical designer produces 3D models, drawings and fabrication packages of custom equipment, nuclear glovebox utility systems, process piping as part of a design team. Typical equipment includes containment systems (gloveboxes, hoods, cleanrooms), material handling equipment, small scale process piping & equipment, furnace systems, metal working systems (mills, lathes, break presses) and pressure vessels. 


    Scope/Key Responsibility           

    Detailed design activities include:

    • Preparation of component, subassembly and main assembly Pro/E (Creo) models
    • Create detailed fabrication drawing packages
    • Evaluation and selection of purchased components
    • Create detailed Bills of Materials
    • Utilize provided piping specifications
    • Follow regimented quality assurance / quality control procedures
    • Generate process, mechanical and piping deliverables
    • Interface with process, mechanical, structural, electrical and I&C disciplines.
    • Will lead and mentor small teams on complex technical design projects.
    • Responsible for designs requiring very little direct supervision from more senior staff on high-level technical work.


    Required Experience    

    • Minimum of twenty (20) years’ experience in related field.
    • Expert knowledge and experience with 3D modeling and drawing proficiency CREO, Pro/Engineer, Solidworks, CATIA or equal is required.
    • Experience with 3D routed systems with Pro/Pipe or equivalent is preferred.
    • High proficiency with Creo and Windchill is strongly preferred.
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Access) is required
    • Strong knowledge of the design of custom equipment and/or containment systems, development of design documentation including fabrication drawings, equipment datasheets and design record documents.
    • Experience in the DOE and DOD market segments is strongly preferred.
    • Hands-on experience with our typical equipment is strongly preferred.
    • Background in the development of piping systems is a plus.
    • Knowledge of the selection of materials for corrosion resistance or decontamination.
    • Ability to independently as well as work in multi-disciplinary design teams.
    • Experience leading and mentoring small teams or technical staff on complex designs.
    • Knowledge or experience in the use of national standards including ASME Y14.5, Y14.100, and B31.3.
    • Degree Requirements: 1-2 yr Technical Program is strongly preferred
    • Certifications: Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.

    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as but not limited to: computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets, scanners, and plotters.


    May be required to travel to other office locations. May be required to travel to client facilities or fabrication and manufacturing facilities.
