Merrick & Company is seeking an experienced Process Engineer for our Los Alamos, NM office. This office primarily supports the designe of hazardous radioactive material facilities and equipment.
This position is located in Los Alamos, a small community west of Santa Fe, NM in the scenic high desert of Northern New Mexico. Los Alamos offers access to a wealth of outdoor activities, an excellent public school system, and a low crime rate.
Process engineer to work primarily on cutting edge nuclear laboratory and energy projects. A successful candidate will be placed in a key engineering role, working within a small, multi-disciplinary team of engineers and designers to execute design and engineering on projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Analyzes equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine appropriate designs.
- Prepares process design deliverables including:
- Process Flow Diagrams
- Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
- Orifice, relief valve, and equipment sizing calculations
- Process line sizing calculations
- Equipment and Instrument datasheets
- Vendor coordination for selection of instrumentation and equipment.
- Reviews and checks the work of other process engineers to determine accuracy and completeness.
- Coordination of design inputs and design activities with other engineering disciplines in a team environment.
- Manage the process discipline scope, schedule, and budget for small to medium sized projects.

- Candidate must be capable of obtaining a Q clearance.
- Bachelor’s degree (B. S.) / Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an Accredited Program;
- A minimum of seven (7) years related experience and/or training.
- Experience in Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear projects is strongly preferred.
Certificates and Licenses:
- Professional Engineer license: New Mexico – or the ability to obtain reciprocity
- Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
- Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
- Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Internet software. In addition, experience in the following process software packages is advantageous:
- AFT Arrow
- AFT Fathom
- AutoCad, Preferred
- Serve as discipline design lead on small to medium sized projects.
- The job requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.
