Mechanical Equipment Designer

 

Introduction     

Merrick & Company is looking for an experienced Mechanical Equipment Designer for our growing Los Alamos, NM office to work on technology projects for the Department of Energy (DOE). This office specializes in the design of prototype/one-off custom equipment, gloveboxes, hoods, specialty research equipment and custom-designed, remotely-operated mechanisms for handling radioactive and hazardous materials. Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.

 

This position is located in Los Alamos, a small community located in the scenic high desert of Northern New Mexico. Job Description

Mechanical designer produces 3D models, drawings and fabrication packages of custom equipment, nuclear glovebox utility systems, process piping as part of a design team. Typical equipment includes containment systems (gloveboxes, hoods, cleanrooms), material handling equipment, small scale process piping & equipment, furnace systems, metal working systems (mills, lathes, break presses) and pressure vessels. 

 

Scope/Key Responsibility           

  • Preparation of component, subassembly and main assembly Pro/E (Creo) models
  • Create detailed fabrication drawing packages
  • Evaluation and selection of purchased components
  • Create detailed Bills of Materials
  • Utilize provided piping specifications
  • Follow regimented quality assurance / quality control procedures
  • Generate process, mechanical and piping deliverables,
  • Interface with process, mechanical, structural, electrical and I&C disciplines.

Required Experience    

  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in related field.
  • Experience with 3D modeling and drawing proficiency CREO, Pro/Engineer, Solidworks, CATIA or equal is required.
  • Proficiency with Creo and Windchill is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with 2D software (AutoCAD preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Access) a plus.
  • Demonstrated capability in the design of custom equipment and/or containment systems, development of design documentation including fabrication drawings, equipment datasheets and design record documents.
  • Experience in the DOE and DOD market segments is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with our typical equipment is a plus.
  • Background in the development of piping systems is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of the selection of materials for corrosion resistance or decontamination.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Knowledge or experience in the use of national standards including ASME Y14.5.
  • Degree Requirements: 1-2 yr Technical Program is strongly preferred
  • Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.
  • Must have the ability to acquire and be open to obtaining a government security clearance.
  • Local candidates strongly preferred.
